Kidney problems and oral health
The kidneys are the organs in the body which perform multiple functions of the urinary system and other systems of the body, they also clean the blood. If the kidneys fail, the individual would be required to go through dialysis, this is the treatment by which the blood is cleaned via a dialysis machine.
The kidneys remove and separate the urea in the blood. If this urea is not separated, it would form ammonia. When the kidneys do not function properly, the urea is not removed from the blood, and eventually, the person experiences a bad taste and odor of the mouth.
Due to the weak performance of the kidneys, the body of such an individual is not able to absorb calcium proerly, this makes the bones in the body weak and they can easily lose their teeth.
The major dental problem which patients of kidney disorders face is xerostomia. This is the condition of having a dry mouth when sufficient saliva is not produced in the oral cavity by the salivary glands. Xerostomia can lead to numerous diseases of the teeth and gums. The bacteria in the oral cavity also find ideal conditions to flourish when it is typically dry. The teeth become more easily decayed with this condition and the oral cavity is more vulnerable toward bacterial and viral infections.
Individuals suffering from kidney problems usually suffer from xerostomia due to the side-effects of the medications, limitations on the intake of fluids and liquids and diabetes. These patients are also more vulnerable to periodontal disease and other bacterial infections of the oral cavity. The immune systems of such patients become weaker and hence they are readily affected with infections of the oral cavity.
People suffering from kidney disease should take special care of their oral health. Proper brushing and flossing of the teeth is vital and these patients should frequently visit the dentist to have the plaque from their teeth removed professionally. By keeping the oral cavity clean of plaque and bacteria, diseases of the gums and teeth can be prevented.
