An elastic ligature is small elastic which attaches the archwire with the brackets. Usually, whenever the dental braces are adjusted, these elastic ligatures are replaced. Different color options are also available which the patient can choose from, and include translucent.
When these elastic ligatures are connected with each other and collectively apply force to pull the teeth together, it is called a powerchain. Elastic ligatures made of wire are also available.
Sometimes, a bracket which has a rotating or sliding mechanism is connected with the archwire. When these types of brackets are used in the dental braces, then there would be no need for elastic ligatures. Such type of mechanism or bracket is called self ligation.
