Dysgeusia or taste disorder

Dysgeusia or taste disorder is when the sense of taste becomes distorted. It is also known as  parageusia. Taste disorder can be from birth or caused by other factors. It can be associated with ageusia ( the complete lack of taste) or hypogeusia ( a decrease in taste sensivity). The main ones that cause dysgeusia are:

  • Chemotherapy: chemotherapy treatment has many side-effects in which the entire oral cavity is affected. One such side-effects is the origin of dysgeusia. Similarly, radiation therapy for the head and neck can also cause taste disorder.
  • The tongue contains taste receptors called taste buds. When these taste buds become distorted and do not function properly, the individual is suffering from dysgeusia.
  • Zinc is a vital element that should be present in the appropriate measure in the body Zinc is very supportive for the health of the taste buds. When there is a deficiency of zinc it may lead to taste disorder.
  • Some medications and drugs also have the potential to trigger dysgeusia.
  • Xerostomia can cause taste disorder
  • Head injury

The symptoms like the alteration in the sense of taste, usually a metallic taste and smell represents Dysgeusia. There are different causes for the duration of the symptoms. If the symptoms arises due to gum disease, dental plague, cold, or a temporary medication, the dysgeusia get extinct after the removal of the cause. Taste disorder is treated with the help of medication, a proper oral treatment with Orthodontist. These medications produce artificial saliva which can minimize the effect of dysgeusia.
