Good oral hygiene is extremely important in maintaining healthy teeth and gums and to ensure good general health. The mouth of every person is a part of the body where bacteria can easily find a hideout. Our mouths are full of bacteria all the time and these bacteria can cause infections in the oral cavity.
From the oral cavity, the infection can move forward to the jaw bone, lungs and other organs. Hence, regularly cleaning the mouth to remove the bacteria is crucial for good health. Good oral hygiene prevents the bacteria from staying in the mouth and producing toxins and acids which create infections.
Poor oral health can lead to severe problems such as cardiovascular disease, low birth weight babies, lung infection, cancer, etc. Similarly, people who are already suffering from severe diseases and who already have a weak immune system become infected with diseases and infections of the teeth and gums more easily. This makes the situation even worse for them. Hence, such patients should be more concerned about oral hygiene.
Brushing the teeth regularly and properly is essential in achieving good oral hygiene and to prevent diseases and infections of the oral cavity. It is recommended that everyone should brush their teeth twice a day, and after every meal. This is important because after meals, some food particles stay in the mouth, and when these become mixed with the toxins produced by the bacteria in the mouth, they can cause infections of the gums and teeth and tooth decay.
When brushing the teeth, you should make sure that you brush each and every tooth from every angle possible. Do not focus on the front teeth only. Brush the teeth from the side and also the upper surface of the lower teeth and the lower surface of the upper teeth. Don’t forget to brush the tongue as well, this is important.
Flossing the teeth is another way to remove the plaque and keep the mouth clean. Flossing has the potential to get rid of the plaque which hides between the teeth and other places in the mouth where the bristles of the toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing should be done at least once in a day.
Mouthwash rinses can remove the bacteria in the mouth very conveniently. It can prevent bacterial infections which lead to diseases such as gingivitis and periodontal disease.
Diet and nutrition also play a vital role in maintaining proper oral hygiene. As they say, prevention is better than cure. Controlling your diet and not consuming food and drink which can adversely affect the teeth and gums can save you from numerous diseases. For instance, excessive use of sugary items promote tooth decay. Similarly smoking and alcohol should be moderated or stopped completely.
Besides these home-based techniques, you should occasionally visit the dentist to get the plaque and tartar removed from your teeth professionally and this will also warn you about any dental disease or infection at the initial stage before it can cause any damage.
