Brushing

For complete oral health, regular and proper brushing is imperative. The toothbrush which you use should have soft or medium nylon bristles which should have round ends. This type of toothbrush is required so that the teeth or gums are not irritated or damaged. Toothbrushes which are small-headed are recommended by experts as they have the potential to reach all areas. Powered toothbrushes have also proven to be helpful for many people.

Proper brushing method

  • The bristles of the toothbrush should be placed on the gum line at a 45 degree angle. Make sure that the bristles are in touch with the gum line as well as the tooth surface.

  • Brush a set of 2 or 3 teeth on the outer tooth surface at a time. Brushing is to be done very gently without apply unnecessary pressure. Brush in a vibrating back and forth rolling motion. Then move on to the next set of 2 or 3 teeth.

  • Similarly, by continuing to brush at a 45 degree angle, with the bristles in touch with the tooth surface and the gum line, brush the inner tooth surface with the same gentle motion

  • The rear area of the front teeth are next, the front half of the toothbrush should be used to make more than a few gentle up and down strokes

  • Then come the biting surface of the teeth, gently scrub back and forth on the biting surface.

  • The tongue should be brushed as well, from the back to the front, so that bacteria is removed.


Replacing of toothbrush

Care should be taken in replacing the toothbrush as soon you observe that it has started to wear, or every 3 to 4 months, whichever comes first. Another important point to remember is to replace the toothbrush if you catch a cold or any other viral or bacterial infection, this should be done because bacteria and viruses collect on the bristles and the chances of re-infection can be high if you use the same toothbrush.
