Heart disease and oral health
Heart disease is all the diseases and conditions by which the functioning and the health of the heart is affected. Heart disease is the most common cause of death all over the world.
There is a strong and crucial connection between heart disease and oral health because if the proper oral hygiene is not maintained, then infections and diseases can arise. These diseases of the gums and teeth can eventually lead towards heart disease. Therefore, it is vital that proper oral health should be ensured and any disease or infection pertaining to the oral cavity should be treated before it causes any further damage.
Periodontitis is a disease of the gums in which the gum tissues become infected by bacteria and get inflamed. The bacteria which cause the infection do not stop at infecting the gums only. If the treatment for periodontal disease is not initiated, then the infection can move forward into the deeper tissues and the bone.
Moreover, these bacteria have the potential to transmit the infection into the bloodstream and in this way, the bacterial infection can even reach the heart. This might cause a heart attack or other heart disease.
In view of the possible damage that untreaded diseased gums and teeth can cause, it is necessary that individuals do not take the condition lightly and initiate treatment in a timely manner.
