The electric toothbrush works on the power of electricity via batteries. When swtiched on, the head of the toothbrush moves swiftly. The movement of the toothbrush head can be oscillating or rotation-oscillating. In the oscillating movement, brush head moves side to side, while in rotation-oscillating movement, it rotates in one direction first, and then rotates to the other direction.

The oscillating movement is also called a vibrating movement. When the individual is using an oscillating or vibrating electric toothbrush, the electric toothbrush has to be used just like a manual toothbrush by the individual as far as the hand movement is concerned. When the individual is using a rotating oscillating electric toothbrush, they have nothing much to do except move the brush gently from one tooth to another.

The movements of the electric toothbrush, especially the rotating oscillation, have proved to be more effective than using a manual toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are ideal for people who are facing physical disabilities and can not do the proper brushing manually. This makes the brushing extremely easy and simple and individuals will tend to brush their teeth more regularly.  Electric toothbrushes are also very helpful for cleaning the areas in the mouth which are hard to reach by manual brushing.

The efficiency and results of the electric toothbrush depend upon many factors. These include:

  • The type of action or movement which the toothbrushe makes
  • The proper use of the toothbrush by the individual
  • The condition of the head of the brush

After using the electronic toothbrush for several weeks, the bristles on the head of the toothbrush start to wear and break. This is when the toothbrush head should be replaced. According to experts, the head of an electric toothbrush should be replaced every 3 to 6 months to achieve best results and maintain proper oral hygiene. If the head of the toothbrush starts to deteriorate before this, then the head should be replaced right away.

A very low voltage is required for running an electric toothbrush. 12v or even less voltage would be sufficient for the job. Sometimes, the electric toothbrushes are rechargeable. Usually, the battery fixed inside these electric toothbrushes is also non-replaceable.

The latest electric toothbrushes available today even possess special features like a timer and LCD display.
