How to get Whiter Teeth

Here are some of the most effective methods to whiten teeth, and maintain their dazzling appearance.

Avoid foods or beverages that stain your teeth

 Finding a successful whitening treatment is only half the battle. Maintaining and preventing further staining by avoiding foods and beverages that only encourage stains is crucial. Changing some lifestyle habits can be beneficial to avoid discolouration in the first place. Some habits that encourage staining include smoking, and consumption of beverages containing the ingredient tannin, including soft drinks like coke, coffee, tea and red wine.

 

Maintain Good dental habits

 

Consistent dental hygiene is essential to maintaining a white smile and preventing more staining. The first and most obvious habit to get into is to regularly brush your teeth to remove plague, remaining food and drink residue. Left in place plague will begin to attack your teeth and gums causing a yellowing appearance over time. Brushing twice a day inhibits the growth of plaque and helps promote a clean white mouth. Brushing after particularly sugary snacks can also be beneficial.

 

Flossing is also of utmost importance as it helps removes plaque build-up from in between teeth and gums so that they appear cleaner and brighter. Floss at least once a day, at night after brushing for maximum results.

 

 

 

 

Regular dental appointments

 

Maintain regularly-scheduled dental appointments with your dentist to help maintain good dental hygiene. Catching fillings and other issues in their early stages helps maintain white, healthy teeth. Your dentist will be able to give you tailored advise on tooth whitening and ensure that any sensitivities you have are addressed, including sensitive gums, crowns or other dental work that won’t react well with a whitening product.

 

Research well

Baking soda is one commonly used natural remedy for teeth whitening but can often cause abrasion to the tooth enamel if used too regularly. Most toothpaste bands market toothpaste containing much gentler abrasives than baking soda and are formulated for everyday use to help remove staining, without the risk of enamel wear.

 

Whiteners, although often successful, usually contain chemicals like hydrogen peroxide that can seriously damage tooth enamel and gums. They are also renowned for making teeth extremely sensitive and have some harmful and dangerous effects if swallowed, like burning and gum erosion.

 

There are a wide variety of natural remedies and products available on the market that claim to whiten teeth. While some of these methods have success, often these options are not well considered and require a professional opinion from a dentist. It is of utmost importance that before trying any whitening routine that thorough research is conducted.
